The Lawngtlai District Land Owners’ Association, an umbrella association of those who donated land for a cross-border road under the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, decided to continue its indefinite strike on Monday.
Earlier, the association had served a stay order to agencies to stop construction of roads owing to a compensation row.
Association president H. Lalremmawia said its meeting on Monday resolved to continue its indefinite strike.
He said two constructing agencies — RDS Project Limited and Odisha-based Atlanta ARSS — were asked to stop their work indefinitely. “We will continue our strike till the government compensates us for our damaged land.”
According to Lalremmawia, 331 landowners have not been paid compensation amounting to over Rs 50 crore for 12 years.
He said no vehicles of the agencies would be allowed to ply during the strike. All sub-contractors had been asked to stop work, he said, adding that volunteers will be sent on Tuesday to monitor the construction sites.
He alleged the detailed project reports of compensation and recommendation submitted by the earlier Congress government were rejected by chief secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo. He said they will meet Chuaungo on Wednesday to discuss the issue.
The 110km cross-border road will link Lawngtlai district with Paletwa in Myanmar.
The construction of the 87.18km-stretch on the Mizoram side began in 2010 and was scheduled to be completed by 2014. However, the deadline was missed owing to the compensation row and it was re-scheduled for March this year. State PWD officials said more than 81 per cent work has been completed so far.
