The stalemate over the formation of the next Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC)’s executive council continued for the third day after the ouster of Rasik Mohan Chakma, the chief executive member, on Wednesday.

The two contenders for power, the ruling ZPM and the BJP, have not been able to cobble up a majority in the House of 20.

Sources said the MNF had not only lost control of the council but also its majority in the House with 13 of its members defecting to the BJP or the ZPM which heads the state government in Mizoram.

Eight MNF members of the district council joined the BJP on Thursday while five have shifted allegiance to the ZPM, which heads the government in the state.

“The BJP tally has gone up to nine after the defection while that of the ZPM to 10, but neither side has the magic number of 11 to stake claim to form the executive council unless there is another round of defection from either the BJP or the ZPM. The situation is both fluid and confusing. If this continues the council will come under governor’s rule,” a source said.

Rasik Mohan Chakma lost the no-trust motion moved by ZPM member Doymoy Daveng Chakma, one of the contenders for the CEM post, on the first day of the winter session.
