The Assam Olympic Association has dissolved the new committee of Silchar District Sports Association, declaring it “unconstitutional”.
Silchar association’s general secretary Subimal Dhar confirmed the receipt of the letter of AOA general secretary Lakhya Konwar ordering disbanding of the new committee after just a month for the violation of three major constitutional rules.
Konwar said in the letter that the governing body does not empower it to bring forward the biennial general meeting according to clause 13 of the constitution of Silchar DSA. He said no constitutional amendment was brought in regarding the increase of number of life members in Silchar DSA. The representation of B and G category clubs in the general council were also not followed according to the constitution, the letter said.
Konwar said, “The inquiry committee, headed by AOA vice-president Anup Choudhury, after scrutinising the documents submitted by Silchar DSA, recommends that since three major constitutional violations were committed in the biennial general meeting of Silchar DSA held on November 24, the new governing body elected in the meeting is unconstitutional. Hence, the earlier governing body will complete its full tenure and the next BGM should be convened in due course as per the constitution of Silchar DSA.”
It can be mentioned the new DSA committee was constituted with Babul Hore as president and Bijendra Singh as general secretary. Elections were held for 12 posts. There was high drama before the formation of the new committee on November 24. A telephone call by chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to Hore made all the difference. Sonowal reportedly asked Hore to step down from the post of president for Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy and offered him the post of general secretary. After hearing this, former MP Sushmita Dev announced she would stand for the president’s post against Roy. A re-run of Lok Sabha polls was on the cards but later they decided not to contest. A BJP worker of Silchar, Dipayan Chakraborty, stood against Hore, who was backed by Dev. Hore has been associated with the DSA for decades.
Dhar said he had handed over charge just a month ago and it was difficult to restart as two matches of the CK Naidu Trophy will be held at Satindra Mohan Dev Stadium in Silchar, under the DAS, in the next fortnight, where Assam will clash against Tamil Nadu and Baroda. Dhar said they will discuss the matter soon.
