Revellers on Monday kept an eye on the weather for Dashami as the district administration across the state worked round the clock to get the immersion ghats ready.

The weather forecast for the city said “cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers” and a met official told The Telegraph that there is a chance of light rain in Guwahati.

Kasomari, Pandu and Soonsali ghats on the Brahmaputra in the city, along with Azara, Sonapur, Basistha and Saukuchi on the outskirts, are the designated seven idol immersion ghats here.

There will be two points of immersion each at Kasomari and Pandu, a source at the deputy commissioner’s office said.

Led by deputy commissioner Biswajit Pegu, the officials took stock of the preparations for immersion which will start from 10am to ensure that over 500 idols are immersed before the midnight.

“This time, wheeled trolleys will be used to ferry the idols from the vehicles at Kasomari ghat. Volunteers will assist in transporting the idols. District development commissioner Atul Sarma, additional deputy commissioners and circle officers will oversee the immersion procedure at Kasomari ghat.

Similar teams, along with medical teams, State Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response Force and civil defence personnel will be deployed at all ghats, the source added.

Pegu urged all Puja committees to start immersion procession early and maintain discipline.

The beat of dhaak seemed more energetic on the penultimate day of the Durga Puja as devotees thronged mandaps across the city on Monday.

A feeling of sadness began to creep in on Navami as the festivity will conclude on Tuesday. Vehicles caused traffic snarls till late at night. Restaurants and temporary eateries, especially near pandals, were overcrowded as Puja revellers tucked into their favourite dishes.

Three bikers dead

Three men died in two different road accidents here on Sunday.

Additional sub-inspector Ringku Gogoi said in the first accident, two youths — Hitesh Gogoi and pillion rider Mantu Kumar — died while taking a U-turn in front of the Assam Secretariat. The second incident took place near Farm Gate, Khanapara, where George David, who was riding a high-powered sports bike, died as he lost control of the motorcycle after hitting a divider. David, 24, died while being taken to hospital.
