Asam Sahitya Sabha, the biggest literary body of the state, on Monday urged the state government to immediately constitute an advisory committee to ensure the use of Assamese as the first language across the state and protection of all other indigenous languages in Assam.
The Sabha suggested that the committee should have representatives from it, Bodo Sahitya Sabha and other literary bodies along with senior bureaucrats.
The Sabha has been expressing dissatisfaction from time to time over non-implementation of the Assam Official Language Act, 1960, by the state government. Its outgoing general secretary, Padum Rajkhowa, said the recently-concluded biennial session of the Sabha at Sualkuchi had also taken a resolution in this regard.
The Sabha urged the state government to take initiatives so that Assamese can be used as the primary language in all the districts of the state.
The Asam Sahitya Sabha, Tribhuvan University Nepal, and Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha are organising a joint symposium in Kathmandu on February 19 and 20 to deliberate on the language and culture of Assam and Nepal.
