The ruling NDPP in Nagaland leads the tally of candidates elected unopposed in the urban local body polls scheduled for June 26.

Altogether 45 NDPP nominees, seven from the BJP, five from the NCP, two from the NPF and two Independents were among the 64 candidates who have won unopposed, said the State Election Commission on Wednesday night.

The NDPP is a constituent of the BJP-led NDA. The BJP, NCP, NPF and the Independents who have won unopposed are part of the ruling alliance in Nagaland which has no Opposition member in the Assembly.

The Opposition Congress has also won three seats unopposed. They have had no members in the state Assembly since 2014.

After 79 withdrawals and 64 elected unopposed, the number of candidates in the fray stands at 523.

Altogether 670 candidates had filed their nominations for the municipal and town council polls being held for the first time since 2004.

However, all candidates from eastern Nagaland have withdrawn from the race in solidarity with the ENPO.

The ENPO is the apex body of eight tribes from six districts. The body is protesting against the delay of the Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT) despite assurance from the Centre in December.
