The RPF seized at least 10 cartons containing huge amount of cash along with gold and silver ornaments at Guwahati railway station here on Tuesday.
The incident took place when unidentified persons came to the parcel gate of the station for booking the cartons.
When the security personnel asked about the contents, they fled immediately.
The RPF personnel recovered Rs 4.88 lakh unaccounted for cash, 31 pairs of gold ornaments and around 5kg silver wrapped in several clothes inside the cartons, but no one had been arrested, said an RPF official.
On Wednesday, an RPF statement said: “RPF head constable Ajay Nag and constable Debabrata Saikia received information from reliable sources about cash and valuables in the parcel siding area. On receiving the information around 6am, they started checking the parcel siding area and detected 10 polybag-wrapped bundles without railway’s mark. Enquiry was made at the parcel office about the polybags, but no details were found.”
“The bags contained Rs 4.84 lakh in currency notes, Rs 4,900 in coins, 31 pairs of gold bangles, 5.10kg silver along with other items. After completion of the inventory record, all the items were segregated and kept in the safe custody of the RPF post by putting proper seal in the presence of witnesses for further action as per norms,” the statement said.
A case has been registered at the Government Railway Police (GRP) office of Guwahati railway station.
The police are conducting further investigations.
