A ruling BJP lawmaker in Manipur resigned as the head of a government undertaking on Thursday, the third party MLA to do so in the past eight days over what many see as “early signs of rumblings” in the government led by N. Biren Singh.

P. Brojen Singh, the BJP MLA from Wangjing Tentha, in a one-line resignation letter to the chief minister said he was quitting as chairman of the Manipur Development Society “due to some personal grounds”.

Before Brojen, Heirok legislator Thokchom Radheshyam had resigned as adviser to the chief minister on April 13 as he “had not been given responsibility so far” and wanted to “focus” on the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and development of his constituency.

Four days later, Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam quit as chairman of the Tourism Corporation of Manipur as he had “not been assigned any responsibility as a chairman”.

Radheshyam and Shyam were ministers in the previous BJP-led government but did not make it to the 12-member ministry this time.

There are reports that some BJP MLAs are in Delhi meeting senior party leaders to “apprise” them about the functioning of the government.

Sources familiar with the situation said a few more resignations would take place in a phased manner to pile pressure on the central and state leadership to take “corrective” steps, one of which would be to “take a close look” at the existing power structure in the government.

The Manipur BJP has convened a meeting of its office-bearers at its headquarters in Imphal on Friday where a senior BJP leader said “all developments concerning the organisation will be discussed”.
