Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan district, which covers the capital Guwahati, has put all government response agencies/line departments on alert mode till June 1 with the Met office warning of heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday due to Cyclone Remal.

The disaster management branch of the Kamrup Metro district has advised the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and its health, PHE, PWD, veterinary and water resources branches to keep their respective teams in “alert mode for immediate response as well as continuity of essential services” due to weather condition triggered by the Remal cyclone which made a landfall on Sunday night between Bengal’s coastal belt and Bangladesh.

The ASDMA had on Sunday issued an Orange Alert in eleven districts while Red alert for seven districts in Assam.

Though the rainfall since Sunday night offered relief from the searing temperatures witnessed over the past four days, the Met warning on extremely heavy rainfall saw the governments in Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya issue an alert and take precautionary steps to avoid untoward incidents.

Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi and East Khasi Hills districts have ordered the closure of schools, both government and private, on Tuesday in view of “unfavourable” weather conditions.

As a precautionary step, the disaster management branch of the Kamrup Metro district has advised the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and its health, PHE, PWD, Veterinary and Water resources branches to keep their respective teams in “alert mode for immediate response as well as continuity of essential services”.

The DDMA has suspended ferry services and fishing activities in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries for two days from Monday while advising circle officers with the help of local police stations to conduct awareness generation for landslide incidents in vulnerable areas. The capital is surrounded by 18 hills.

All revenue circle officers were also asked to convene the circle-level task force meeting immediately and ensure adequate preparedness of all the line departments under its jurisdiction for the effective response as and when required. They were also asked to identify the relief camps required and keep ready the same for immediate sheltering of the affected people.

The district DTO was asked to keep the recovery van, excavator, crane ready, the DFO to keep tree-cutting teams ready for clearing of uprooted trees due to the storm. and the NDRF/SDRF to be ready for any eventuality.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had on Sunday night tweeted about government’s readiness to tackle situation triggered by Remal.
