An international cricket match in the city always induces excitement in the fans. It was no different on Sunday as India squared off against Sri Lanka in a T20 game at the ACA Stadium at Barsapara.
However, tight security and a spell of rain threatened to spoil the mood inside and outside the ground.
Though the police had categorically said on Saturday, on the eve of the match, that nothing except mobile phones, purses and vehicle keys would be allowed, the Tricolour was allowed inside the stadium on Sunday.
Even gamosas were spotted in the stands.
“Five of us have come to watch the match today. We have been at two previous matches at the Barsapara stadium. But this time, I think the security measures are stricter. However, we were allowed to bring the Tricolour inside the stadium,” said college student Pradip Baishya.
When almost 85 per cent spectators were inside the stadium and the match was about to start, steady rain played spoilsport around 6.45pm. India had already won the toss and chosen to bowl first by then.
“I hope the match starts. I have come all the way from Jorhat to watch an international cricket match for the first time,” said businessman Jayanta Deka.
