Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will address a gathering of around 25,000 people here at Khanapara on Saturday to show solidarity with the people of Assam who have been opposing the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) since it was passed in Parliament early this month.

“We have set a target to assemble around 25,000 people on Saturday. Thousands of people of the state have hit the streets to protest against the CAA. Rahul will come to show solidarity with the agitators,” Assam PCC president Ripun Bora said on Thursday.

Rahul has been meeting protesters and urging people to build up a resistance against the CAA which promises citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim minorities from three neighbouring countries of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Rahul has stood by student protesters with the message “No Indian student should allow Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah to divide India the way they are doing”.

The Assam PCC has also been continuing with their protest marches to create awareness about the “harmful aspects” of the CAA.

During the marches, party leaders and workers visit different constituencies of the state and meet people from varied walks of life.

One such march was taken out in Upper Assam’s Nazira on Thursday. No such rallies will be conducted on Friday and Saturday considering Rahul’s visit. Further protest programmes will resume on Sunday. Bora said the state government, worried having seen the mass protests against the CAA, is taking steps like imposing restriction on the teachers’ community from taking part in political activities. “The government is creating confusion among people by spreading misinformation. But the people are aware of the reality and they will continue to oppose the act.”

Bora on Wednesday reviewed various departments of the party about the Saturday rally.
