Police have launched an investigation into a robbery in Assam’s Cachar district in the early hours of Thursday.

An FIR was lodged by the house owner Rais Uddin in the morning.

He said a gang of 10-12 dacoits broke the door lock around 1am which woke him up. Before he could react, the dacoits tied his hands and asked him to remain quiet, he told the police. Rais lives at Boroitali part V village under Katigorah police station, around 37km from here.

The robbers asked him about his son, who runs a business in Meghalaya, and Rais told them he was not at home. The dacoits then went to another room and broke open an almirah.

They took out ornaments, including two gold necklaces, three pairs of earrings, three sets of gold bangles and two gold rings and Rs 60,000. Two of the dacoits had guns while the others were carrying sharp weapons. They were dressed in army fatigues and some of their faces were covered with black cloth, Rais said.

Before fleeing with the cash and ornaments, the dacoits told Rais they were going to the adjacent house to loot and threatened of dire consequences if he raised an alarm. Besides Rais, his wife and two daughters were present at the time.

Rais, a farmer, said they were in shock for a long time after the dacoits left.

Around half-an-hour later, Rais went to the imam of the nearby mosque and told him about the incident. The police were later informed, Rais said.

A source said a police team, which rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation early on Thursday, later visited the house and nearby areas after the FIR was lodged. The police have completed their preliminary investigation. No arrests have been made so far.
