Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated and launched development projects worth Rs 14,300 crore in Assam during a daylong visit to Guwahati, which saw him attend four back-to-back programmes.

The programmes included the inauguration of AIIMS Guwahati, the closing ceremony of the platinum jubilee of Gauhati High Court, a 5km roadshow from Basistha Chariali to Sarusajai Stadium and a mega Bihu dance performance at the stadium.

Modi’s visit coincided with the first day of Bihu, the festival that heralds the Assamese New Year.

Modi’s day in Guwahati started with the formal inauguration of the AIIMS, the first in the Northeast.

At the inaugural function, Modi dedicated the AIIMS and three other medical colleges (Nalbari, Nagaon and Kokrajhar) in Assam to the nation, laid the foundation stone of the Assam Advanced Health Care Innovation Institute (AAHII) being set up at IIT Guwahati and launched the ‘Aapke Dwar Ayushman’ campaign by distributing Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) cards to eligible beneficiaries.

Modi said: “We are moving forward with the mantra of India’s development through the development of the Northeast. AIIMS Guwahati too is an example of the fact that our government fulfils all its resolutions.”

Taking a dig at the Congress without naming the party, Modi said development became impossible “when the politics of dynasty, regionalism, corruption and instability start to dominate”.

“Nowadays I see a new disease. Wherever I go in the country and talk about the development of the past nine years, some people are troubled. This is a new disease. They complain they have also ruled for several decades but why they don’t they get credit?”

“Credit-hungry people and the mindset to rule have done great harm to the country. Janata (people) are an avatar of God. Earlier ones were hungry for credit. That is why the Northeast for them is distant, they created a feeling of alienation but we continue to serve you as your sevak...” Modi said.

At Sarusajai Stadium, where he attended a mega Bihu dance that made it to the Guinness World Record on Thursday evening, Modi virtually inaugurated a methanol plant in Namrup, laid the foundation of a railway bridge over the Brahmaputra from Palashbari to Sualkuchi in Lower Assam, the beautification of Rang Ghar in Sivasagar and five railway projects costing over Rs 6,000 crore.

The Bihu event ended at 7.15pm with a laser show.

Before starting the roadshow, Modi launched a mobile app called Assam Cop at the closing function of the platinum jubilee of the high court. The app will facilitate the search for accused persons and stolen vehicles from the database of the Crime & Criminal Network Tracking System and the VAHAN national register.
