Two child marriages were prevented with the help of Childline in Tinsukia district of Assam.
The grooms and their relatives were taken to Tinsukia Sadar police station for interrogation.
“We have brought them here for interrogation. We learnt that they have come from Sonari. With the help of Childline, we were able to trace the girls, their mothers and relatives. The grooms were of their fathers’ age. We have brought all of them here for questioning,” said a police officer.
He added: “Investigation is on and the findings will be disclosed accordingly. We have asked for the birth certificates of the girls from their mother. Only then it will be established whether they are eligible for marriage. We brought the girls from Porbotiya where they were getting ready for their wedding. The grooms were caught from Housing Colony.”
An angry mob condemned the girls’ families for agreeing to child marriage.
