Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh on Monday said his government was committed to deliver transparent and corruption-free governance and would never encourage favouritism and nepotism.

Speaking at a function for distribution of uniforms to police personnel at the 1st Manipur Rifles Battalion parade ground, he said since the present government took charge, “it was steadfastly maintaining transparency of the highest order”.

He said though it might be a simple uniform-distribution function, it provided a platform to give due respect to the police personnel for their remarkable duty towards safeguarding lives and property and maintaining peace and tranquillity in society.

“It is by their commitment and hard work that the state government has been able to combat drug menace in the state,” he added.

Referring to the “paper belt scam” in the police department, Biren Singh said the policemen bought uniforms themselves in the past as sub-standard uniforms were supplied to them. “The present government would never let such a scandal occur again and it would provide branded and standard uniforms to all police personnel,” he added.

He appealed to the people to support the government in curbing corruption in recruitment, promotion, transfer and postings in various departments.

Biren Singh along with cabinet ministers distributed the uniforms to the respective superintendents of police and officers-in-charge of different districts and police stations.

Deputy chief minister Y. Joykumar and director-general of police L.M. Khaute attended the function.
