The Assam Water Supply and Sewerage Board signed an agreement with Jindal Water Infrastructure Ltd to supply 24 hours drinking water in Dibrugarh town. Town and country planning minister Atul Bora was present on the occasion which took place at Dispur, sources said.

The water supply project in Dibrugarh is a welfare scheme under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut).

The mission is a flagship programme of the Centre to provide basic services to households and build amenities in cities to improve standard of living.

The water supply project will cover 25,391 households in Dibrugarh town, catering to 167,733 people. It is designed to provide drinking water for 30 years — up to 2050.

The total estimated value of the project is around Rs 193.93 crore, officials said. In Assam, Nagaon, Dibrugarh and Silchar have been adopted under the Amrut mission.

The mission directorate of Amrut, Assam, has taken up three water supply projects in Dibrugarh, Nagaon and Silchar town and will develop parks in Guwahati, Nagaon, Dibrugarh and Silchar.

The state government had undertaken Rs 650-crore development projects under Amrut in the four cities/towns.

Officials at the mission directorate said work of the Nagaon water supply project had already started. It will cover 27,609 households in the district catering to 143,015 people.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 238.33 crore and it will last for 30 years.

The Amrut mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2015 to set up infrastructure to ensure adequate sewage networks and water supply.
