Leaders of several Opposition parties, who attended a meeting on Saturday called by home minister Amit Shah, criticised the Narendra Modi government for its failure to curb the violence in Manipur and demanded that an all-party delegation be sent to the northeastern state immediately.

The Opposition leaders also questioned Prime Minister Modi’s continued silence on the violence that began on May 3 — more than 50 days ago — and has left 110 people dead and displaced 60,000.

Sources said the government remained non-committal on the demand for the visit of an all-party delegation and said it was doing its best to restore normality in the state.

In a statement, Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamul Congress accused the Centre of “ignoring” the needs of the people of Manipur and wondered whether the Centre was “trying to turn Manipur into Kashmir”. The party demanded that an all-party delegation be sent within a week. Trinamul was represented by its Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien at the meeting.

“After the meeting of our leaders in Patna, within 24 hours the Opposition spoke in one united voice for Manipur, the Northeast and India,” O’Brien told reporters.

Among others who attended the three-hour meeting at the Parliament complex were BJP president J.P. Nadda, former Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh of the Congress, Conrad Singh of the NPP, M. Thambi Durai of the AIADMK, Tiruchi Siva of the DMK, Pinaki Misra of the BJD, Sanjay Singh of AAP, Manoj Jha of the RJD and Priyanka Chaturvedi of the Shiv Sena-Uddhav Thackeray.

Manoj Jha said later: “Everybody emphasised on the thought that Manipur requires a healing touch and for that, it requires a face that must unite and not a face that divides.”

The RJD leader said the entire Opposition said the person heading the administration of Manipur is not trustworthy. “We cannot have peace in Manipur till he is in charge,” he said.

Ibobi Singh, a three-time Manipur chief minister, told reporters that peace was not possible under the present state government headed by N. Biren Singh and demanded his immediate replacement.

On whether Amit Shah presented a road map for peace, the Congress leader replied in the negative. “We hope that the Prime Minister will hold a similar meeting after his return from foreign trips,” he said.

DMK’s Siva said the Opposition parties demanded that an all-party delegation be sent to Manipur. “It is not a law and order breakdown to be controlled by the police and the army. It is a failure of governance by the state and the Centre,” he said, adding the Opposition leaders expressed deep concern over Modi’s silence.

BJP’s Manipur in-charge Sambit Patra told reporters that Shah assured the Opposition leaders that all efforts were being made to restore peace.

The home minister also told the meeting that since the violence began in the state, there has “not been a single day” when he did not speak to Modi or the Prime Minister did not give instructions, Patra added

Union ministers Pralhad Joshi, Nityanand Rai and Ajay Kumar Mishra, Union home secretary Ajay Bhalla and director of Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka were present at the meeting.
