One more stabbed in Shillong

He received injuries on his head and abdomen and was admitted to Shillong civil hospital

A person hailing from Assam was allegedly stabbed here on Thursday, although Meghalaya police maintained that the situation in the state was “normal and under close watch”.

Assistant inspector-general of police G.K. Ïangrai said Sanidul Islam, 21, from Barpeta district was stabbed in Mawkhar locality by unidentified miscreants around 2.30pm. He received injuries on his head and abdomen and was admitted to Shillong civil hospital. He is out of danger. Sources said Islam is a mason and had come to the locality to inspect a house, which required to be repainted. “He had come out of the house to have lunch when he was attacked by miscreants,” a source said. Mawkhar is close to Motphran on the way to Ïewduh, the state’s biggest market. Curfew was imposed in and around Ïewduh from 1pm on Thursday.

On Saturday, Rupchand Dewan, a vegetable vendor, had succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital after he was stabbed at Ïewduh. He, too, hailed from Barpeta and lived in Laban locality here.

The East Khasi Hills district administration imposed curfew in Shillong agglomeration and its adjoining areas from 9pm on Thursday till 5am on Friday. On Friday, curfew hours will be relaxed in Khyndailad from 9am till 4pm and in Ïewduh from 5am till 1pm.

In a major respite to citizens, the government will restore mobile Internet services in four of the six districts in Khasi-Jaintia hills from 10am on Friday.

“Situation in the state is normal and under close watch,” Ïangrai said. The state police appealed to all citizens and social media users to refrain from circulating wrong information or hateful messages. They said several cases have been registered during the unrest. Some important cases have been referred to the state’s CID.
