Police on Thursday lifted Section 124A related to charges of sedition against 3,000 people on Tuesday for taking out a peaceful protest march against the CAA, NRC and NPR but without prior official permission.

Police also served a showcause on the officer-in-charge of Dhanbad police station, Santosh Kumar, asking why the sedition charge was slapped on 3,000 people without a proper probe.

On Wednesday night at 10.01pm, CM Hemant Soren had tweeted in Hindi that the law is not meant to intimidate people or gag their voices, but rather instil a sense of security among people.

Talking to The Telegraph, Prabhat Kumar, DIG (Coal Belt), said Section 124A related to sedition has been lifted after a primary supervision of the case by Dhanbad city SP R. Ramkumar.

The DIG confirmed the disciplinary action against OC Santosh Kumar for the sedition charge, but said the other sections of the IPC related to unlawful assembly, however, were still in place in the FIR.
