Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh on Thursday said the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be updated in the state when the Centre gives approval for its implementation.
Replying to a query raised by Congress legislator Kh. Joykishan Singh on the second day of the winter session of the Assembly, Biren Singh said his government will implement the NRC after getting nod from the Centre but the base year was yet to be decided.
Replying to another question by Congress MLA Surjakumar Okram, he said 3,669 suspected illegal migrants were prevented from entering Manipur from 2017 till December 15 this year, owing to steps taken by police, particularly in Jiribam district and Mao in Senapati district. Moreh police in Chandel district are also closely monitoring the entry of outsiders, he added.
Every effort has been made by the government to trace and deport suspected illegal migrants after checking the credential of travellers or tourists. As a result, nine persons, including a minor, were arrested and booked in connection with five different cases, he said.
In a call to attention motion raised on financial crisis by Opposition members Kh. Joykishan and K. Meghachandra Singh, Biren Singh, who also holds the finance portfolio, said there was no question of financial collapse. We will bring out financial white papers for the previous five financial years, he said.
He said the state received Rs 305 crore in May and June, Rs 315 crore in July and Rs 343 crore in August against the stipulated central share of Rs 416 crore per month.
The state government has taken various steps, including increase in excise duty and VAT on petrol and diesel, to improve revenue collection. The state government is also mulling to re-introduce lottery sale again, he said.
