The last day of filing nominations for the June 26 urban local body elections in Nagaland saw nominations being filed from four of the six eastern Nagaland districts despite the Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organisation's (ENPO) decision to abstain from the polls that are being held for the first time since 2004.
ENPO is the apex body of eight tribes from the six districts comprising eastern Nagaland including Mon, Tuensang, Longleng, Kiphire, Noklak and Shamator. The elections will be held for three municipal councils and 36 town councils in the state.
An official of the Nagaland State Election Commission told The Telegraph on Tuesday that nominations had been filed from six town councils from eastern Nagaland.
The nominations were filed from Longleng (Longleng district), Naginimora, Tizit (Mon), Pungro (Kiphire) and Shamator (Shamator) town councils, among others, the official said but could not give the total number/s of nominations filed from the four districts “as reports were still coming in from the districts”.
As many as 61 nominations were filed from the four districts, including a woman candidate, M. Akiuchi. She is from the ruling NDPP and has filed her nomination from the Shamator town council.
There were also reports that two BJP candidates are set to win unopposed from Niuland town council near Dimapur.
Tuesday was the last day of filing nominations. The scrutiny of the papers will take place on June 13 and the last day of withdrawal is June 18.
