The NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC) Mizoram, a conglomerate of five civil society and student organisations, on Wednesday staged a protest rally in Aizawl to express its opposition to the Centre’s decision to withdraw the free movement regime (FMR) and fence the Indo-Myanmar border.

The NGOCC Mizoram includes the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA), Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (a women’s federation) or women’s organisation, Mizoram Upa Pawl (senior citizens’ association) and two apex bodies of students — the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) and Mizo Students Union (MSU). Of the largely porous 1,643 km Indo-Myanmar border with four northeastern states, including Nagaland (215 km), Arunachal Pradesh (520 km) and Manipur (398 km), Mizoram’s share is around 510 km.

On Wednesday, the NGOCC Mizoram passed a resolution during its one-hour protest on the FMR and fencing issues, including expressing its “strong dissent and protest” against the decision to “dismantle” the FMR and “establish border fencing” along the Myanmar border by the Centre, a CYMA leader said in a text to The Telegraph.

“We stand in solidarity with the NGOCC and extend our full support to their ongoing efforts to challenge and resist the implementation of border fencing and the abandonment of the Free Movement Regime along the Indo-Myanmar border,” the resolution said. The rally was chaired by H. Lalthianghlima, president, MZP, where the CYMA brass were among those who addressed thegathering.
