East Garo Hills deputy commissioner Swapnil Tembe has issued an order under Section 4 and 6 (a) of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, to the general public, shopkeepers and tourist site operators, prohibiting smoking in public places. The order also prohibited sale of tobacco to minors and asked shopkeepers to display signage saying “Sale of tobacco to a person below the age of 18 years is a punishable offence”.
5 from Manipur held with drugs
Meghalaya police arrested five persons from Manipur on Friday for allegedly trying to traffic more than 10kg of Yaba tablets. East Khasi Hills superintendent of police Claudia A. Lyngwa said they received inputs that a tourist vehicle travelling from Guwahati to Shillong, was being used by drug suppliers. An operation was carried out and the vehicle intercepted at Mawiongrim viewpoint.
The police found 10.174kg of suspected ampheta-mine/World is Yours/Yaba tablets inside the luggage of one Jiten Wairokpam Singh.
Lyngwa said Singh was involved in smuggling along with four others — Akoijam Subhachandra Singh, Samphangso Shinglai, Nganba Wairokpham Chenglei, and a woman, Nengneichong Lhanglal. The five hail from Thoubal and Ukhrul districts. A case was registered at the Mawlai police station under the NDPS Act.
Mukhi directive
Assam governor Jagdish Mukhi on Friday directed Jorhat Medical College and Hospital authorities not to allow attendants round-the-clock in wards. He asked the authorities to make separate arrangements for attendants within a month. Mukhi also said the hospital had a neurosurgeon but no neurologist, a state-of-the-art cath lab but no cardiac surgeon.

Man dies in road mishap
Sushanta Kumar Biswas, 59, died in a road accident in front of Indrakumari Girls’ High School in Hailakandi town on Friday. Sources said a speeding motor cycle hit him from back. Biswas was brought to SK Roy Civil Hospital in a critical condition and later referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital where he died of his injuries.

Tuensang deputy commissioner Kumar Ramnikant on Friday said movement of people across the international borders between India and Myanmar has been prohibited with immediate effect in view of the outbreak of novel coronavirus in China and other countries. The deputy commissioner also imposed a blanket ban on hunting of wild animals.

Football meet from tomorrow
The 16th Captain Jintu Gogoi, Vir Chakra, Memorial Football Tournament will commence at Army Polo Ground here from Sunday. The inaugural match will be played between Moran Town Women’s 11 and Tengakhat College. Two more women’s teams — Tea Sports Academy Raja Ali and Khowang College — are participating. Twenty boys’ teams are participating, who have been divided into two pools. Pool A comprises Dibrugarh 11, Moran Town Boys 11, DHSK Commerce College, Tengakhat College, Khowang College, DHSK Arts & Science College, Nazira College, Lahowal College, Dao Division and Jalan Tea Estate.
Pool B consists of DDR College Chabua, Margherita, Dirok Tea Estate, Doomdooma College, NLB City College, Kamargaon College Golaghat, Hollonghabi Tea Estate, 17 Garhwal Rifles and Thanai Tea Estate.
The winners in the boys’ section will be awarded Rs 75,000, while the first and second runners-up will get Rs 50,000 and Rs 30,000 respectively. In the girls category, Rs 50,000 will be awarded to the winners and Rs 20,000 to the runner-up.
Arms seized
Police seized one .22 pistol along with three live ammunition from one Ajit Nomosudra in Nagaon district on Friday. Nomosudra was on his way to Meghalaya to sell the firearm.
