The sun played hide and seek on the first day of the year, as people in the city made a beeline for places of worship, praying for peace, happiness and prosperity in 2020.

Temples, mosques, churches and gurdwaras across the city started filling up with worshippers from early morning.

Being a Wednesday, Ganesh temples at Latasil and Ganeshguri were filled with devotees.

Merrymaking was on the top of their agenda as people headed to parks, zoo and picnic spots to start the year with feasts and entertainment.

The picnic season this time was marred by incidents of local youths harassing picnickers at several picnic spots in the state.

Having a good time was seen by anti-CAA protesters as allegedly being unfaithful to the mass movement against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act passed by the BJP government in New Delhi, ignoring the voice of the people of the state.

Some also reiterated their commitment to the anti-CAA agitation on the first day of the year by organising protests.

Students of Cotton University demonstrated their unyielding stand against the Act in a protest in front of the institution in the morning, calling on people from different parts of the state to join the agitation.

Protests were also organised at Dighalipukhuri and the Asam Sahitya Sabha office premises with speeches and poetry.

The first day of this year will also be remembered for a hike in train fares and the price of milk.

An order by the railway ministry said while suburban fares remain unchanged, ordinary non-AC, non-suburban fares were hiked by 1 paise per km of journey from Wednesday.

The railways also announced a 2 paise/km hike in fares of mail/express non-AC trains and 4 paise/km hike in the fares of AC classes.

The Railways, in a statement, said in order to expand passenger amenities and facilities at various railway stations and trains, it has become imperative to increase the fare marginally without overburdening any class of passengers.

The price of milk in the city has been hiked from Rs 46 to Rs 49 per litre, with milk producers citing increased price of cattle feed and labour cost as factors for the hike in price, effective from Wednesday.

The day will be memorable for different people for different reasons.
