Kokrajhar MP Naba Kumar Saraniaon Thursday slammed the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) for organising the Dwijing Festival on the bank of the Aie in Chirang district from Friday at this “critical juncture when people of Assam are fighting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act”.

Terming it as “the victory festival” for the BJP-led government and its ally Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), the ruling party of BTC, after the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in Parliament, Sarania had called the people of the BTC and its neighbouring areas to “boycott” the 12-day Dwijing Festival.

The BTC administration and the state’s tourism department are jointly organising the fourth edition of the festival.

Sarania also demanded to uphold the use of Assamese language in educational institutions and offices equally along with the Bodo language in the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD).

“The state cabinet has decided to form autonomous councils for some ethnic groups to weaken the movement against the CAA creating division among them,” Sarania said.

In the coming BTC polls Gana Suraksha Party (GSP), formed by Sarania in September 22 at Pathshala in Baksa district, will contest in all the 35 seats of the 40-member council, he said.

The main aim of the GSP is to protect the “rights and interests” of the people of the council and ensure their development.
