A Myanmar Air Force Y-8 cargo plane crash-landed at the Lengpui airport in Aizawl district of Mizoram on Tuesday morning, injuring eight of 14 crew members on board and leading to the cancellation of all flights for the day.

The plane had arrived to evacuate 92 of 276 soldiers who had fled to Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district after their camps had been run over by pro-democracy and ethnic armed forces in Myanmar. They were brought to Aizawl for evacuation on Saturday and Sunday.

The injured were admitted to the Lengpui Primary Health Centre and none of them is in critical condition, an official said.

Officials said the incident took place around 10.19am, leading to the runway being “temporarily closed” and “all flights cancelled” for the day.

“The main operation of the Myanmar Air Force is to take back 92 remaining Myanmar army personnel who have sought shelter and surrendered before the Indian authorities,” an official said.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered an investigation into the accident, a state government official said, reports PTI.

The Myanmarese soldiers entered Bandukbanga village in Lawngtlai district with their weapons on January 17 and approached the Assam Rifles. They have been under the supervision of the Assam Rifles since then, the official said.

These soldiers were brought to Aizawl on Saturday and Sunday to be sent to Myanmar from the Lengpui airport.

The group, headed by a colonel, has 36 officers and 240 lower-rank personnel.
