Santosh Hojai, 38, who was abducted and killed was cremated on Saturday evening at Harangajao.
Hojai was abducted on the evening of April 24 by five unidentified persons from his house at Harangajao. After six days his body was found buried near National Highway 27 at Lailing reserve forest under Langting police station, around 100km from his house in Dima Hasao district.
Hojai, a contractor, was a former cadre of the now disbanded militant outfit Dima Halam Daogah. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a two-and-a-half-year old son.
Another former cadre of the DHD was picked up by police on Friday evening for interrogation.
Before cremation of Hojai, people of Harangajao took out a march in the town.
The Dimasa Students Union (DSU) on Friday expressed concern over the kidnapping and murder of Hojai and demanded handing over of the case to the CBI or the NIA for investigation.
Gauhati High Court on Thursday had directed the Assam director-general of police to submit a detailed report of the incident on Monday.
Petitions have also been filed before the Assam State Human Rights Commission and the Assam Public Grievances Commission seeking investigation. The BJP condemned the incident. It urged the law enforcement authorities to take immediate action and demanded compensation for the victim’s family.
Another former militant was released on Saturday evening.
