Bijen Mitra, 18, was killed, while his friend Nabajit Mitra, 21, was injured, when the motorcycle they were travelling on was hit from behind by a tractor at Tamulpur in Baksa district on Wednesday. Police seized the tractor.
4 students hurt in lab blast
Four students of Assam University in Silchar were critically injured in a blast in the chemistry laboratory on Wednesday. Bipasha Sengupta, Panchtapa Sen, Tanmoy Saha and Saurav Paul were performing tests when a beaker filled with acid exploded. An official said the injured students were admitted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital and one had been shifted to Sankara Nethralaya in Guwahati. He said an inquiry will be conducted.
Peddler in custody
A drug peddler, Kedarnath Chetry, 50, who was arrested at Habigaon in Udalguri district on Monday night, was sent to judicial custody after being produced in a local court on Wednesday. Mazbat police recovered 22kg cannabis from his car.
7 hurt in Arunachal mishap
A jeep driver and six passengers were injured when their vehicle hit a hillside and disrupted traffic for hours near Parshuram Kund under Wakro circle in Lohit district of eastern Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday.

Meet on Dibrugarh land issues
A meeting to discuss issues related to land revenue was held in the conference hall of the Deputy commissioner’s office here on Wednesday.
The meeting, which was chaired by deputy commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha, discussed issues related to land revenue such as allotment of land pattas to landless indigenous people, collection of land revenue, mutation, partition, conversion, reclassification and settlement of land.
Reviewing pendency status of cases of mutation, partition, conversion and reclassification of land at circle level, Jha directed circle officers to take steps towards early disposal of cases and minimize the pendency percentage within 10 days. He directed circle officers to monitor all windows, which are at direct public interface, to prevent activities that may result in public inconvenience.
Circle officers were directed to keep strict vigil to stop any encroachment of roadside land and to collect reports on status of such lands from lat mandals and gaon burhas. Additional deputy commissioner Rajib Thapa asked to reactivate village land management and conservation committees to prevent encroachment.
Circle officers were asked to prepare a list of brick kilns and check the status of land documents available with them and updates of the royalty to be paid to the government. They were also asked to work on the land patta proposals to be distributed among the landless indigenous people of the district.
The meeting was attended by additional deputy commissioner Susanta Kumar Dutta and election officer Runav Ramchiary among others.

A National Assessment and Accreditation Council team led by its chairperson professor Bishnu Charan Barik concluded its two-day visit to Sao Chang College, Tuensang, on Wednesday.

The AIUDF urged the superintendent of police of Hailakandi to take action against an assistant sub-inspector of police, Tinku Goswami, who had been suspended immediately after the communal clash in Hailakandi town of south Assam on May 10 last year.
