The Meghalaya Games, scheduled to be held from December 16 to 20, has been postponed by the Meghalaya State Olympic Association owing to the “volatile situation” here.

Shillong has been witnessing intense protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which forced the association to postpone the event. In a letter, signed by working president John Kharshiing and general secretary Chiranjib Choudhury, the association said, “Because of the volatile situation, the executive committee unanimously resolved to postpone the Meghalaya Games to a later date in the interest of the athletes and their safety.”

However, the Meghalaya State League (MSL), a football tournament, including all top clubs from across the state, is on. The MSL is being held in venues outside Shillong.

The semi-final match was affected with Druma Sandruma, a club from the Garo hills, getting caught in the protests in Guwahati while reaching Jowai. Though the match took place as per schedule, the second semi-final, however, was postponed by a day as the Rangdajied United could not travel due to curfew in Shillong.
