The unrest in Manipur has led to the death of around 60 “innocent” people, injured 231 and burnt down around 1,700 houses, besides affecting 35,655 people of whom around 10,000 are in shelter or relief camps, chief minister N. Biren Singh said on Monday.

The situation in Manipur turned volatile on May 3, soon after a solidarity march was organised by the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur in the10 hill districts to oppose the demand of the majority Meitei community for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribes list. The Meitei community mostly resides in the valley districts while tribals live in the hills.

Singh on Monday said 1,041 arms and 7,460 pieces of ammunition were looted by mobs from security posts and personnel. Of these, 214 arms and 4,273 ammunition have been recovered.

The Manipur police chief had last week said it was "organised" looting.

The chief minister shared the details within hours of the Supreme Court taking note of the unrest and expressing concern over the loss of life and properties.

The BJP heads the government in Manipur.

"The incidents that took place on May 3 are very unfortunate. According to available reports, around 60 people have lost their lives. They all are innocents," Singh said.

He added: "Around 231 people have suffered injuries, serious and minor. Around 1,700 houses were burnt down. These are very, very unfortunate incidents. I appeal to the people of the state to stand together to restore peace at the earliest.

"About 10,000 are still left in the shelter camps.”
