The Centre on Sunday announced that a three-member judicial commission had been set up to probe the large-scale violence that had broken out in Manipur on May 3.

The commission will be headed by Ajai Lamba, who had been the chief justice of Gauhati High Court from October 7, 2019, to September 20, 2020. The other two members of the commission are former Assam state information commissioner and IAS officer Himanshu Shekhar Das and retired IPS officer (1986 Telangana cadre) Aloka Prabhakar.

After a stock-taking visit to the state, Union home minister Amit Shah had said on June 1 that a judicial commission would be set up to find out the causes of the clashes and those responsible for the violence that had left at least 98 persons dead and affected over 45,000.

The situation remains extremely volatile in the state even after a month.

The judicial commission will have to submit its report to the central government “as soon as possible but not later than six months from the date of its first sitting”.

The commission has been mandated to look into the sequence of events that led to the riots and find out whether there were any lapses or dereliction of duty on the part of any of the responsible authorities/individuals.
