Meitei Leepun, a radical Meitei cultural organisation, has warned prominent human rights defender Babloo Loitongbam for allegedly working against the interest of the Meitei community.

According to reports from Imphal, the organisation told mediapersons on Sunday that Loitongbam had been advocating for the protection of illegal immigrants from Myanmar with a leading human rights organisation even after he was asked last year to stay away from issues related to the ongoing conflict between the Meiteis and the Kuki-Zos.

The Meitei organisation, which is accused by the Kuki-Zos of fanning the ongoing conflict in the state, also claimed to possess proof of financial transactions between the Kuki-Zo community and Loitongbam.

Meitei organisations have blamed the influx of Kuki-Chin from Myanmar for the conflict. They want their detection and deportation and the BJP-led state government has ensured couple of rounds of deportation to Myanmar this year.

The Meitei Leepun cited Loitongbam providing refuge to the Women Wing Commander of the PDF (People’s Defence Force) from Myanmar in Imphal before the conflict started on May 3, 2023. It is also unhappy with a Loitongbam-backed peace initiative to be held in Bangalore this month.

Urging the public not to engage with Loitongbam, the organisation said his ongoing collaboration with Kuki-Zos, his pushing for the protection of illegal immigrants, his financial dealings with the Kukis and his blaming the Meiteis for the conflict are “against” the interests of the Meitei community”.

Loitongbam is yet to react to the Leepun accusation.
