Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh on Monday warned individuals and groups against “brandishing” illegal firearms “and roaming the streets”.

A government statement, quoting the chief minister said: “No one, other than state machineries, can take the law into their hands,” adding that the government will “not” remain a silent spectator and “ take” stringent action as per law.

The warning comes a day after a former state BJP MP, H.S. Benjamin Mate, posted a video on X, claiming “radical” Meitei Leepun chief Pramot Singh purportedly fired at “mainland Indians” living in Imphal’s Telipatti in the presence of police.

He tagged Union home minister Amit Shah in the post. Singh was purportedly seen firing a shot with what appears to be a pistol or revolver.

The chief minister, addressing a gathering at the Haj Complex in Thoubal district on Monday, said that the government’s first priority after the formation of the BJP-led government in the state was to “provide rights of being an Indian citizen to the people and bring development and peaceful co-existence in the state”.
