Tripura police on Wednesday recovered contraband items valued at Rs 50 lakh from a 29-year-old man at Dharmanagar railway station in North district, around 170km from here.

North superintendent of police Bhanupada Chakraborty told reporters: “We got a tip-off that a man with a black bag was loitering outside Dharmanagar railway station. We rushed to the spot and seized 10,000 Yaba tablets from his possession and arrested him. The contraband is valued at Rs 50 lakh.”

He also said during preliminary investigation, the accused was identified as Tinku Majumder of Agartala.

“He claimed that he had gone to Silchar in Assam for treatment. While coming back, he said someone gave the bag to him and told him to drop it in Dharmanagar. He came to Dharmanagar by train today morning and was waiting for someone to collect the bag. We will produce him in court tomorrow. We are investigating the matter,” he said.

On December 22, Tripura police arrested a schoolteacher and seized 8,000 Yaba tablets valued at Rs 40 Lakh from Bunnang village in Dharmanagar subdivision. The arrested was identified as Soumen Acharjee, a teacher of Deocherra School in Dharmanagar.
