Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday asserted a Congress-led alliance government will come to power at the Centre in 2024 and his party is in talks with other parties on how to win next year’s general elections.
Addressing his first poll rally at Diphupar near Dimapur for the February 27 Nagaland Assembly elections, Kharge said an alliance government will “come” in 2024 and the Congress will “lead” the alliance.
“We are talking with other parties because otherwise our democracy and Constitution will go... Therefore, with every party, now and then, we are calling, we are talking, we are sharing our views on how to win in 2024... the BJP will not get a majority... all other parties together, of course, Congress will lead, will get the majority. We will follow the Constitution, we will follow democracy. Let a hundred Modis and Shahs come. This is India ... Our constitution is very strong,” Kharge said.
Kharge’s assertion on the Opposition alliance to take on the BJP comes three days after Bihar chief minister and JDU leader Nitish Kumar said at the CPI(ML) convention in Patna that the BJP would slip below 100 seats if a broadbased unity could be forged before the 2024 general elections.
He had also appealed to the Congress leadership to take a call on an Opposition alliance as soon as possible.
The Congress chief seemed to have used the poll rally in Nagaland to send a message to Opposition parties on the issue of alliance and the role his party wants to play in any proposed alliance.
Congress leaders have said the party will be discussing ways to unite the Opposition during its three-day plenary in Raipur from February 24.
