Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday expressed his displeasure at the quality of anti-erosion work done by the Brahmaputra Board in Majuli.

Sonowal was miffed to see the poor quality of work using geo bags when he visited the erosion-hit Bhakat Chapori village in Majuli district on Sunday.

The chief minister visited the area after he received complaints about the sub-standard implementation of erosion-control measures.

When he took up the matter with the Brahmaputra Board, its chairman Rajiv Yadav came from Delhi and visited Majuli and took stock of the work recently.

Sonowal said the safety and security of the people are of paramount importance and under no circumstance, his government would tolerate any deviation.

Majuli is the Assembly constituency represented by the chief minister.

He said Brahmaputa Board would have to undertake restoration work in the affected areas within two weeks after the water level recedes.

The chief minister made it clear that no slack would be tolerated and the government would fix responsibility.

He also said that the people of Majuli want to get rid of the scourge of erosion permanently and the government will do whatever is required to achieve that.

“The engineers responsible for negligence in protection work would be dealt with sternly and the Brahmaputra Board has been asked to initiate action against the erring engineers,” the chief minister said.

He later held a meeting with the officials of the Brahmaputra Board.

The chairman of the Assam State Minority Welfare Board, Mominul Awal, Majuli deputy commissioner Deba Prasad Misra and senior officers and engineers of the Brahmaputra Board were present during Sonowal’s visit.

On May 6, the villagers had protested against washing away of geo bags laid by a private firm engaged by the Brahmaputra Board to check erosion at Bhakat Chapori.
