The Koch Rajbongshi National Convention (KRNC) on Sunday questioned the government and the Bodoland Territorial Areas District administration on the fate of the Koch Rajbongshis who were excluded from the National Register of Citizens if the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was not implemented in the BTAD.

The convention’s general secretary, Biswajit Ray, said they had earlier requested every organisation in Assam to be united during the protest. However, that did not happen and the bill became an Act.

Ray said, “If the Act won’t be implemented in the BTAD then what will happen to the Koch Rajbongshis excluded from the NRC in that particular region?”

He said if these people are kept out of the NRC, there was a chance of them being treated as foreigners in the region.

He said, “The future of these Koch Rajbongshis seem to be uncertain as there is no proper statement by the government on their fate. The BTC administration and the state government needs to clear its stand on the issue.”

Ray added that there was no guarantee that the people who would come to Assam after the implementation of the Act would accept Assamese culture.

“When several people who live inside Assam do not introduce themselves as Assamese how can we even expect foreigners to adopt Assamese culture?” he asked.
