Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and representatives of the 69 organisations who are meeting the leaders of national and regional political parties from different parts of the country in New Delhi to lobby against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, will oppose any visit of BJP ministers, including that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to Assam.

Modi is scheduled to visit the region on February 8 and 9. KMSS adviser Akhil Gogoi said they would continue their agitation till the government announces the scrapping of the bill.

“Though we have been told the bill will not be brought during the current session of the Parliament, we are not going to sit idle. We appeal to the people of Assam and the region to accelerate their agitation. We will oppose the visit of any BJP ministers to Assam. We will also oppose Modi’s visit,” Gogoi said while addressing a news conference in New Delhi on Saturday.

On Saturday, the KMSS and representatives of the 69 organisations from Assam met CPM’s Sitaram Yechury, AAP’s Sanjay Singh and Ram Gopal Verma of the Samajwadi Party.

The KMSS and these agitating leaders have also raised the demand for Scheduled Tribe status for the six communities of Assam, namely Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Chutia, Matak, Moran and tea tribes. “We are also putting pressure on getting the bill on ST status to the six communities passed. All the parties whom we met have extended their support,” Gogoi said.

An AGP delegation is also in New Delhi. The All Assam Students Union is expected to be in the capital soon.
