Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Saturday after he was reported to be suffering from stomach ache and fever.

However, after a multiple medical tests, he was taken back to Guwahati Central Jail.

The KMSS leader’s sickness came a day before Akhil and three other KMSS leaders are slated to stage an indefinite hunger strike inside the jail from Sunday against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

With Akhil’s health issues arising on Saturday, the “fate” of the fast by the KMSS leader was yet to be decided till the filing of the report.

Besides Akhil, KMSS members Dharjya Konwar, Bittu Sonowal and Manash Konwar are currently lodged in the jail in connection with a case registered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

KMSS leader Hussain Mohammad Shahjahan said, “He is suffering from fever and stomach ache. Tests were also conducted for possible kidney ailments. However, after the check-up, he was taken back to jail. The decision over the fast and protest has not been taken. Right now we are only concerned about his speedy recovery.”

On Tuesday, while being brought to an NIA court here, Akhil had announced that they would sit for a hunger strike from Sunday to add muscle to the ongoing protests against the CAA, which, according to the leader, is losing its “steam”.

On February 20 also, the leader was taken to the GMCH after he complained of dental and bone ache and eye problems.

Akhil was arrested by Assam police in Jorhat on December 12 last year, a day after the Citizenship Amendment Bill was passed in Parliament, during the statewide anti-CAA protests. Later, a case was registered against him, accusing him of having nexus with Maoists, and he was sent to jail.
