Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader and anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protester, Akhil Gogoi, was granted bail by Gauhati High Court on Thursday in connection with a case that was registered with the crime branch, Panbazar police station, in Guwahati.

Gogoi has been granted bail in connection with a crime branch case (no. 01/2020) registered against the KMSS leaders in January.

KMSS leader Mukut Deka said: “Although Akhil has been granted bail, it is yet to be clear when he will be released from jail.”

A source said Akhil might still be in judicial custody as he is in Sivasagar jail in connection with another case in Sivasagar police station.

Akhil was sent to 14-day judicial custody on Monday by the court of the chief judicial magistrate, Sivasagar, and as he is already in custody, he might still be in custody till April 6.

He was granted bail on March 17 by the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court, three months after he was arrested for his alleged role in the anti-CAA protests and for alleged links with Maoists.

However, on March 19, he was rearrested in a similar case by Sivasagar police.

The KMSS leader has been in judicial custody since December 27 facing allegations that he has links with the Maoists.

However, since March 19, he was in four-day custody with Sivasagar police.

He was first arrested by Assam police on December 12.

On December 17, he was handed over to the NIA which arrested him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Akhil’s counsel advocate Z. Kamar told this correspondent: “He has been granted bail in the case which was registered by the city police’s crime branch. However, he is yet to receive bail in the Sivasagar case. We are going to move the court soon.”

While granting the bail to Akhil, the high court asked him not to engage in any kind of violent and antisocial activities in future.

Due to the coronavirus threat, the entire hearing was conducted via video conferencing.

Several political leaders and social activists have demanded Akhil’s release, including Ulfa leader Anup Chetia.
