More than 24 social organisations of Karbi Anglong on Saturday demanded detection and deportation of 2.5 lakh Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts.

The organisations, which protested against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, also staged a demonstration in front of Semson Sing Ingti Memorial Park in Diphu.

The protesters said the people of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao would never accept the Act and would approach the President for its repeal in the greater interest and survival of the indigenous people of the hill districts and the state as a whole.

The president of United Karbi Students’ Association (UKSA), Ratan Terang, said, “In accordance with paragraph 20 of the Sixth Schedule, the names of non-tribals living illegally in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) area should be deleted from the voter list. The council should have separate land laws for the autonomous council region to protect its land and boundary, the customary land laws should be restored and the Assam Land & Revenue Regulation Act, 1886, should be cancelled.”

He also said the council should immediately take up all the demands of the organisations.

“We have been repeatedly reminding the council to detect and deport illegal immigrants present in Karbi Anglong but the council is doing nothing. We have also asked the KAAC to frame new rules and delete the names of non-tribal voters living illegally in KAAC from the voter list and introduce inner-line permit (ILP) in the district,” he added.
