The Congress suffered a jolt in Assam ahead of the Lok Sabha polls with its state working president Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha resigning from his post and expressing support to the BJP-led state’s government’s “development agenda”, along with another MLA — Basanta Das — on Wednesday.
Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra had turned into a Congress Todo Yatra and more party MLAs would support the BJP in the days to come.
Both Purakaystha and Das are three-term MLAs. Their departure, Congress insiders said, will impact the party’s fortunes in Karimganj and Mangaldoi Lok Sabha seats.
The Congress is part of a 15-party alliance to take on the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls. If seat-sharing talks are successful or there is a tacit understanding among the Opposition parties, the BJP may not find things easy.
Assam has 14 Lok Sabha seats, nine of which are held by the BJP. The Congress has three seats.
The Congress has showcaused both Purakaystha and Das.
Purakaystha said in his resignation letter that he would continue to “work only as the primary member of the Congress party”.
Congress insiders said they were expecting “something” like this from Purakaystha as he was allegedly “facing some inquiry heat from the current dispensation” while Das had been “upset” with the party leadership over “issues related” to the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.
“It is now a matter of time before the duo formally joins the BJP,” a Congress insider said.
