Kabak Yano from Arunachal Pradesh scaled Mount Everest on Tuesday morning and became the fifth woman to do so from the frontier state.

Hailing from Kamle district, the 25-year-old scaled the summit along with five team members from Nepal — Babu Sherpa, Ngima Dorjee Sherpa, Subash Rai, Lakpa Nurbu Sherpa, and Shere Sherpa.

Yano completed her basic and advanced mountaineering courses from the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling of Bengal and the National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports at Dirang in Arunachal Pradesh respectively. She had earlier scaled Mt UT Kangri (6,080m) in Ladakh.

Apart from mountaineering, she is also interested in cricket, having represented the Arunachal women’s team.

Arunachal Pradesh governor Lieutenant General K.T. Parnaik (retired), chief minister Pema Khandu and deputy chief minister Chowna Mein were among those who congratulated her.

Parnaik said that “Miss Kabak Yano’s conquest of Mount Everest demonstrates that the daughters of Arunachal Pradesh are resilient, courageous, adventurous, enterprising, and talented” and that her “accomplishment will inspire other young people in the state to excel in their chosen fields”.

Mein hailed her “unwavering dedication and passion”.

Congratulating Yano on her “incredible achievement”, Khandu said in a post on X: “Her journey from Arunachal Pradesh to the world's highest peak is a testament to her dedication and perseverance...”
