A delegation of the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), a ruling ally of the BJP government in Tripura, on Thursday left for New Delhi to meet Union home minister Amit Shah. They will hold a discussion on their demands which include abrogation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) and creation of Tipraland for the tribals of the Tripura.
Speaking to reporters, IPFT assistant general secretary Mangal Debbarma said a four-member delegation left for New Delhi on Thursday to meet Shah to discuss three issues for which they have been agitating in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) for the last 10 days.
“Today, we will meet Union home minister Amit Shah to press for our demands which include the exemption of Tripura from CAA, implementation of NRC in the state and creation of Tipraland. The demonstration is on in the ADC and it will continue for an indefinite period till our demands are fulfilled. It has been 10 days since we have been agitating for our demands,” he said.
He also said an IPFT delegation would visit Shillong on January 19 to meet MHA officials on these demands.
The delegation comprised party president and revenue minister N.C. Debbarma, general secretary and forest minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia, assistant general secretary Mangal Debbarma and organisation secretary Amit Debbarma.
On Wednesday, party supporters, who have been on an indefinite sit-in for last 10 days against CAA, implementation of NRC and creation of Tipraland, tonsured their heads as part of their protest.
