Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi said he was “very” ill and scared of death. Akhil said this on Saturday while he was brought to the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court here.

He has been suffering from severe backache, urology problem and several other ailments for over a week now.

Earlier on Thursday, the NIA court asked the Guwahati Central Jail authorities to continue to provide adequate healthcare facilities to Akhil. The court order came following a medical report in which Akhil was reported to be “stable”.

Before being taken away by police, Akhil said: “It looks like I will die inside the jail. I am very sick and need an urgent and proper medical care.”

Akhil’s counsel, advocate Manoj Deuri said during the hearing too they had prayed before the court to provide proper medical attention to the ailing leader. “He needs to be shifted to the hospital, but it is surprising that he was not. We are also thinking of moving a fresh petition before the court seeking his immediate shift to the hospital soon,” the advocate said.

The NIA court had directed the jail authorities to conduct check-ups of Akhil at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) whenever needed and explore the possibility of an inpatient treatment facility for him.

The National Human Rights Commission had also registered a case on Wednesday after two human rights activists, Babloo Loitongbam of Human Rights Alert (Manipur) and Henri Tiphagne of Human Rights Defenders Alert (India), submitted a complaint to the NHRC.

Akhil was arrested on December 12 in Jorhat by state police during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests.
