IIT Guwahati is introducing a mandatory one-time medical check-up at the time of admission of new candidates as part of its initiatives to check the “loss of student lives on our campus”.

There have been three suicides at the institute this year. The last one was on September 8 in which a third-year BTech computer science student was found hanging in his room, triggering a protest by students on the campus for two days.

A statement issued by IIT Guwahati on Friday said that the institute has “conducted” a thorough investigation into the “recent loss of lives on our campus” and has “identified several factors contributing to these tragic events”.

“While many of these incidents were non-academic in nature, they underscore the urgent need for enhanced support systems and preventative measures to safeguard the well-being of our students,” the IIT said.

“Recognising the importance of understanding students’ medical history, IIT Guwahati is introducing a mandatory one-time medical check-up at the time of admission. This will enable the institute to provide tailored support and ensure students receive the necessary care,” the statement said. The other steps included “open dialogue and support” where the institute encourages students to come forward and discuss any challenges they may be facing.

“A self-sustainable task force has been established to reach out to every student and provide the necessary support,” the statement said, adding the institute is prioritising the establishment of dedicated counselling services at the hostel level in addition to existing counselling resources and strengthening the faculty advisory system.
