Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examinations to be held as usual in Meghalaya

The examoinations will witness 30,697 candidates appearing in 103 centres

The Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examinations in Meghalaya will be held as scheduled from Monday in spite of an uneasy calm prevailing in the state capital for the past three days.

The HSSLC examinations, covering arts, science, commerce and vocational streams, will witness 30,697 candidates appearing in 103 centres — 64 in Shillong and 39 in the Tura region.

An uneasy calm has been gripping the state capital since Friday following a clash at Ichamati village under Sohra civil sub-division where one person died.

On Saturday, a man succumbed to his injuries after he was stabbed while at least 10 people were injured. Most of the injured were also stabbed.

The Meghalaya Board of School Education is all set to conduct the examinations while measures have been taken to ensure that everything go smoothly.

Education minister Lahkmen Rymbui said the examinations will be held as per schedule and end on March 25.

On Sunday, a board official confirmed that the examinations will not be postponed.

The board has taken steps to ensure that the examinations are conducted smoothly where in certain sensitive centres and groups have been formed to assist the officers in-charge of the centres.

Besides, flying squads comprising board officials, magistrates and police personnel will be deployed.

Supervising officers have been appointed for all centres whose mandate will be to visit the centres on all exam days to ensure that they are conducted smoothly.

The officers will also submit confidential reports to the board, based on which the board will act if there are loopholes in the conduct of the examinations.

Besides, there are 254 institutions under the HSSLC which are affiliated to the board — 175 in the Shillong region and 79 in the Tura region. There are 115 institutions which are unaffiliated institutions — 75 in the Shillong region and 40 in the Tura region.

The Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examinations will be held from March 4 till March 16. Over 50,000 students will appear in the exam.
