Altogether 137 accidents were reported between January and November this year, resulting in 39 deaths and 186 injuries, in Hailakandi district of south Assam.

This was revealed in a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee that reviewed accident-related cases, including fatalities for the current year in Hailakandi district.

Reviewing the traffic scenario at a meeting with stakeholders at her office conference hall here on Monday, deputy commissioner-cum-chairperson of the DRSC, Keerthi Jalli, asked the departments concerned to analyse the data and to adopt effective measures to deal with the scenario, including putting up radium-coated barricades to prevent mishaps.

Jalli directed the health authorities to submit a status report on developing the infrastructure and facilities at SK Roy Civil Hospital to provide immediate treatment to accident victims.

The civil hospital has been declared a trauma centre by the Centre.

The meeting decided to create awareness on road safety at the panchayat and village levels involving all stakeholders.

It also decided to request the school authorities to form a cadet group, comprising senior students in each school to create awareness on road safety.

Jalli asked the PWD officials to erect signages in front of schools and directed them to submit a status report.

The meeting also discussed threadbare traffic-related issues, including e-rickshaws.

District development commissioner Bikram Dev Sharma, district transport officer S.R. Mannan, circle officers, inspectors of schools, principals of schools, NGOs, officials of the PWD, health and police departments, among others, were present.
