Activists of 13 organisations staged a sit-in here on Thursday to pressurise the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government to speed up the process of setting up entry and exit points to curb influx.

They also stressed the need to find an amicable solution to the long-pending inter-state boundary dispute with Assam and shifting of settlers from Them ïew Mawlong area here.

The activists assembled at the parking lot near the additional secretariat and raised placards expressing their dismay over the delay to come up with strong mechanisms to deal with influx problem, and for taking time to shift settlers from Them ïew Mawlong and solve the boundary dispute with Assam.

Khasi Students Union president Lambokstarwell Marngar said though a letter was submitted to chief minister Conrad K. Sangma last month requesting him to hold a review meeting with all the 13 organisations and brief them on the status of the setting up of the entry and exit points, no response has come from the government.

“This is the first step of showing our concern on the issues, and we will resort to other forms of agitations if the state government is adamant,” Marngar said.

On September 19, the KSU had staged a protest in the city against the murder of a Khasi villager at a village in Ri Bhoi district bordering Assam, and asked the Meghalaya government to provide protection to Khasis residing in areas along the inter-state boundary.

The union also planned to meet Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to seek his intervention in view of the frequent aggressive acts on the part of Assam in areas alo-ng the inter-state boundary.

On June 4, the high-level committee headed by deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong was constituted by the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government to find a solution in connection with the demand to relocate the settlers from Them ïew Mawlong.

The committee has held numerous meetings but is yet to submit its report to the government.

The formation of the committee came after violent protests erupted in view of the demand to shift the settler from the area.
