The All Assam College Teachers’ Association staged a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act at Chachal here on Saturday and urged the government to stick to the Assam Accord for detecting and deporting illegal foreigners.
Association general secretary Himangshu Maral said, “We will not accept CAA, which is designed to naturalise illegal foreigners on the basis of religion. Illegal foreigners’ issue is a colonial creation and we must resolve this with a historical perspective rather than solving it on religious norms.”
Maral also spoke about the need to sensitise the common people on CAA and its future implications in the state, during the protests.
Earlier, All Assam Students’ Union and a few other organisations had criticised the college teachers for allegedly not opposing the Act. Asked about it, Maral said, “Our zonal and district units have been protesting since December 12. However, we could not protest centrally as we were engaged in conducting various examinations.”
“We neither wanted to hamper the students nor the academic environment. We waited till the end of the academic calendar,” he added.
